"The Benefits of Intentional Life Design: Prioritization and Well-Being Outcomes" Authors: M. A. J. Creswell, S. M. Grant Journal: Journal of Positive Psychology, 2020 Abstract Overview: This study explores the impact of intentional life design—where individuals categorize their tasks based on priorities, focusing on what is most important during different periods of their lives—on overall well-being and stress reduction. By comparing groups that used "life menu" methods to control groups that did not prioritize tasks in a structured manner, the study found that individuals who adopted a structured framework (similar to identifying essentials, supporting tasks, and joys) reported significantly higher satisfaction and lower stress. The "menu approach" helped participants feel empowered to select tasks based on current relevance and energy levels, thus improving clarity and intentionality. Key Findings: Increased Life Satisfaction: Participants who categorized their tasks (essentials, supporting tasks, and personal joys) showed a 28% increase in life satisfaction scores. Stress Reduction: Those using a structured prioritization system reported lower stress levels, as they felt less overwhelmed by competing demands. Greater Intentionality: The process of defining core priorities helped participants stay focused on their values, enhancing personal fulfillment and goal achievement. The approach of categorizing life commitments into "entrées" (essentials), "appetizers" (supporting tasks), and "desserts" (personal joys) closely mirrors the intentional life design studied in Creswell and Grant's research. The study supports the idea that such categorization brings about greater balance, allowing individuals to be more deliberate in their choices, thereby enhancing well-being. By designing your life menu with intentionality—focusing on the most important aspects while allowing flexibility for smaller tasks and personal joys—you're more likely to create a balanced, fulfilling routine that aligns with your values and promotes overall well-being. 😊

One of the things I'm most passionate about these days is the applicability of psychological research and methods to organizational leadership and team culture. 🌟 My favorite right now? The concept of "bids", conceptualized by Drs. John and Julie Gottman, two researchers and clinicians who have studied relationships for decades (and yes, they're married!) Working with countless organizations and teams across the country has led me to see how their idea of "bids," initially developed for understanding marital relationships, holds remarkable potential for improving team dynamics in professional settings. 💡 A "bid" is essentially any attempt from one partner to another for attention, affirmation, affection, or any other positive connection. In a couple’s therapy context, responding positively to these bids fosters trust and strengthens relationships. However, when transferred to the workplace, especially within leadership teams, understanding and responding to bids can be equally transformative. 💥 For leaders, recognizing that each interaction with a team member can be seen as a bid for connection changes the dynamic significantly. These bids might look like a team member asking for feedback, suggesting a new idea, or seeking support on a project. Each of these moments presents an opportunity for leaders to connect, support, and empower their team members. 💭 Responding positively to these bids requires active listening, validation of the team member's contributions, and constructive feedback. It's not merely about acknowledging the bids; it's about engaging with team members in a manner that builds trust and encourages open communication. This approach can lead to a more cohesive and motivated team, as members feel seen, heard, and valued. ☀ The Gottman Method teaches us that the success of relationships—whether personal or professional—often hinges on how these bids are made and responded to. By incorporating this understanding into leadership practices, leaders can create a more inclusive and dynamic environment that not only drives the team forward but also fosters a culture of mutual respect and collaboration.
